The air around Holly Hills smells a little less sweet after the departure of a beloved, albeit short-lived, bakery: Star cafe and bakery (Southern Grand Boulevard, 5547). It opened in July last year and is now closed. The store served its last customers last week.

Star owner Nikki Ahmadi posted the news on her confectionery business’s Facebook page. Bake.with.nikkiDecember 16, citing “personal matters” as the reason for her decision, and by “business” she means the boy she is looking forward to next year.

“I am sad to announce that I have closed Star Café & Bakery. Today, a year ago, I was very happy to open a shop window in order to better serve my customers in person. growing family and currently prioritizing my personal life.”

Last July, Ahmadi opened Star Café & Bakery in a small store near the intersection of Grand Boulevard South and Bates Avenue in Holly Hills. An Afghan refugee who moved to St. Louis as a child two decades ago, Ahmadi had a successful career in corporate accounting before giving it all up to pursue her dream of baking. As Ahmadi said Riverfront Times in an interview this August, she started baking in her spare time to relieve stress, but after winning the best tasting cake award at the Bride St. dedicate a full day to baking.

However, lovers of cardamom-flavored biscuits and sweet and savory Ahmadi kulche-shor treats need not worry; Ahmadi will continue to offer her baked goods and custom orders through her Bake.with.nikki brand, which customers can access through her Facebook page of the same name.

Ahmadi doesn’t rule out reopening the brick and mortar shop one day, noting in response to a comment that she will “consider reopening and moving in the long term.” For now, though, she’s excited to create her sweet treats at her own pace for the attendees, who showed her support last year.

“I want to thank my customers for all your loyalty and support, and I will continue to serve you all to the best of my ability, fulfilling custom orders and requests as I have done in the past,” Ahmadi writes.
