PROFESSOR Jason Leitch has warned the Scots that they should consider wearing masks again as viruses sweep the country.
The National Clinical Director told BBC Radio Scotland this morning that Scots should consider putting masks back on and not going to work if they have the virus.
He said, “And we must not pass diseases on to others.
“This is a new culture for Scotland.
“That means I won’t go to your office. I will not drive this bus.
“If you have the virus, if you are unwell, you must stay at home and not spread this virus to others.”
Mr Leitch said that from one in eight to one in ten hospital beds there are people with Covid or the flu.
He said that Covid, flu and strep A are exacerbating the bed blocking problem that is currently being seen.
Mr Leitch also suggested wearing a mask if you’re not feeling well, including if you feel like you’re just getting sick or recovering from the virus.
He said that in Southeast Asian culture, people wear masks if they are unwell, early on or recovering from the virus.
Of the masks, he told the program: “I don’t think it’s a bad idea.
“You wear a mask in shops, on the streets, on public transport.
“It would be nice for Scotland and the UK to inherit the Covid pandemic.”
He also urged Scots to be patient with the NHS as GP practices reopen today after the winter break.
The director said we need to “use our healthcare services wisely” and use NHS Inform and NHS 24, local pharmacies and GP practices before contacting A&E.
He told BBC Breakfast: “A&E is like a canary in a coal mine where everyone knows it’s always open, it’s always there, it’s still available to you.
“It is there, but let’s use it wisely.
“NHS Inform will tell you when to report an escalation.”
But Mr Leitch said he: “Admitted that there are problems in the whole system.
“But if we lose hope, we will have problems, there are things in the system that will make it better.”
