It was a goal that had a huge impact on the Rangers season.

Kevin Thomson wonders if Kyogo Furuhashi’s last breath balancing out the old firm is affecting the club’s SPENDING.

The ex-Ibrox midfielder was desperate to see Michael Beal’s men take three points away from Celtic on Monday afternoon.

Tommo had high hopes that his old club’s victory would revitalize their Premier League campaign and breathe new life into their title hopes.

And, in turn, lead to serious January signings.

But after failing to cut the lead to six points, the former Hers star now believes the club’s money may decide to keep his hands in his pockets for now.

He told SunSport: “If the Rangers had won, there would have been more investment in January than there could be now.

“I don’t know for sure, I’m just saying what I think, as my honest opinion.

“At the best of times, it’s hard to find the right players in the January window.

“So maybe it’s better to keep your pennies and invest in the right players in the summer. This is not defeatism and a cancellation of the season, because at the Rangers it is impossible.

“I just think that if they had managed to last until they beat Celtic, they would have had more financial backing than they have now.

“Now it might be nicer and smarter to hold that money until the summer.

“I could be wrong, but this is how I see it.

“Nine points is a big gap for the Rangers.

“I certainly think Mick will be optimistic about this as he has now seen what Ange-Ball is all about.

“He will support himself to be able to recruit and take a team to the competition field when it’s best to do so.”

Beal promised to beef up his team with players who want to be at the Rangers, insisting that any player would be lucky to be offered a deal.

Tommo said: “They are both brilliant clubs, Rangers and Celtic. Playing in front of 50,000 or 60,000 people every week is hard, but that’s the point. The prestige and profile of the Old Firm player is fantastic.

“This is a massive platform. Okay, so the money might be better for the top players in the south, but playing in Europe is a big attraction and you can do it in Glasgow.

“And there are trophies to be won.

“So I think Mick made an important point. There were many big players from the Premier League who were shocked by life at Rangers or Celtic.

“Look at Steven Gerrard, a world-class icon who came to Scotland and ended up telling a player like Jermain Defoe how great Rangers are.

Tommo sees the Rangers’ failure to close on Monday as a missed opportunity.

He said: “Actually, I thought that both teams lacked rhythm and both teams turned the ball over a lot.

“But the Rangers had a good chance. Alfredo Morelos’ header, when he brushed off Josip Djuranovich, should have really scored.

“But going 1-0 ahead showed character.

“Of course, it was a shame to lose a late goal, but in general, the way Rangers competed with Celtic showed that the gap is not as wide as some people think. Mick just needs time to realize everything he wants.

Celtic are still a very good team. The main difference is in the quality of the team and how they can deal with injuries to key players and still survive.

“Rangers are heavily dependent on the top 11 in the park each week.

“If they have it, they are really competitive.

“But any kinks in that armor can be difficult.

“Probably there are players on the Rangers team who play without any pressure that they can lose their jersey.

“It’s opposite on the other side of the city.

“Celtic have four full-backs who can all play at a high level and the same happens in the middle of the field.

“Callum McGregor has been injured for over two months but they didn’t miss him much.

“So the depth between the two lineups is the main difference at the moment.

“It’s just important that the Rangers target the right players and bring in the people who will make the team better.”
