Man in his 40s shot dead by armed police in tense standoff ‘after threatening people with a knife’

A MAN was shot dead by armed police officers after allegedly brandishing a knife at people.

Police rushed to the scene in Carlisle, Cumbria this afternoon amid reports that a man threatened people at the address.

Armed officers found a man in his 40s with a knife just after 3:30 p.m.

After the shooting, the police used firearms.

The man was wounded and pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was hurt, and at this stage, the police believe that this was an isolated incident.

The cordon along Borland Avenue remains in place while police continue their investigation.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: “We are asking members of the public not to be present at the scene.

“During the night, patrols in the Botcherby area will be stepped up to reassure and support the local population.

“Police informed the Independent Police Conduct Authority.”
