First class stamps could soon cost more than £1 if Saturday deliveries are not cancelled, Royal Mail has warned.

Royal Mail boss Keith Williams has predicted a “significant” increase if the six-day delivery service continues.

He said, “You deliver the same number of letters in six days as you could in five.

“So it drives up the price of stamps.”

Business secretary Grant Shapps told a select committee last week that he would not approve any plans to cut letter delivery over the weekend.
