Shortly thereafter, he received a standing ovation at Celtic Park before the Hibs match when he thanked the fans for their support, becoming visibly emotional at the reception.

During his career at Celtic, McGarvey made 245 appearances and scored 113 goals between 1980 and 1985, winning the league twice during that time.

He has also won the Scottish Cup twice and the League Cup once.

McGarvey made his breakthrough at St Mirren, helping them to prominence in the First Division, and his form saw him move to Liverpool under Bob Paisley.
