A CRAZY rescue mission continues after a warship sank during a violent storm in the Gulf of Thailand.
The Royal Thai Navy said at least 28 sailors are still “in the water” awaiting rescue after the HTMS Sukhothai sank at 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.
Officials said Sukhothai was patrolling 20 miles from the port of Bang Saphan when it encountered choppy water and took on water.
The ship’s electrical system failed, resulting in engine failure.
The horrific footage from the ship shows the ship drifting on its side as crew members dressed in life jackets desperately cling to the railing.
The Navy sent three ships to help, but only one was able to reach the scene before the warship sank.
Shocking radar images showed that half of the 76-meter vessel was submerged in a nearly vertical position.
The Royal Thai Navy said 78 sailors and crew members were rescued, but 28 are known to be still waiting to be pulled out.
It is not clear if the crew members are in the water or waiting in the lifeboats.
The footage shows a group of sailors wearing red life jackets sitting in a huge black lifeboat waiting to be rescued.
According to preliminary data, three crew members were injured.
No deaths have been confirmed.
The rescue efforts were hampered by strong winds and the size of the waves, the Royal Thai Navy said.
The search for the missing sailors will continue throughout the night, officials said.
Sukhothai, commissioned in 1987 and built in the US, is one of seven corvettes in the Royal Thai Navy.
